But when the book was finally published in 1986, it became an American Library Assocation (ALA) Best Book. Her first historical novel, “Time Enough for Drums,” was turned down by 10 publishers, all of whom claimed that children wouldn’t read history. Inspired her son’s interest in the Revolutionary War, she turned to historical fiction. In 1979, she finished a short story, “Term Paper,” that grew into the her first young adult novel of the same name. She began writing seriously when her two children were young, and though her novels were not successful, in 1969 she began a career as a newspaper columnist. Instead she became a secretary, then became a stay-at-home mother after marrying in 1960.
